In the late afternoon of August 21, 2003, a particularly violent thunderstorm
caused a lightening strike about 20 feet from the house. Jan was home and
upstairs at the time. With the flash, she held her breath waiting for something
to crash into the house. Fortunately, the tree missed; it fell across our front
yard. The generator, which was running at the time, was not so lucky. The
repairman said it was easier to list what wasn't broken than what was. The force
of the tree splitting sent pieces in all directions.
